I’ve worked with little guys who ultimately grow up to be this way. It’s devastating. I can’t excuse any of the things they do to inflict harm on other people—what they’re doing is dead wrong. But the source of it is often the kind of childhood trauma that makes the news. The kind that ends with the rights of birth parents being terminated because of how truly awful and extensive the abuse is. The things a lot of these kids do can honestly be described as monstrous. I’ve heard some describe them as monsters. If that is what they are, they weren’t born that way. Monsters aren’t born—they’re made. And the saddest part of all of it, to me, is that at one point, that person was a baby who had a shot at being something other than a psychopath. Truly the definition of hurt people hurt people.
