Thank you for this article! I’m biracial (south Asian) and what I will say is there’s a ton of colorism amongst ourselves. In addition to discriminating against darker-skinned south Asians, internalized colorism often manifests as outward racism towards Black people. I can’t necessarily speak for East Asian cultures but I know at least for us, a lot of outward sentiments are reflections of internalized racism. Both my paternal grandparents are South Indian with brown skin. Growing up, I watched my grandma bleach her face with Fair and Lovely and I later learned that she also expressed racist sentiments towards Black people. For her, the color of her skin resulted in deep insecurity and in making derogatory comments to other people who also had darker skin. We do have the power to speak up for change in our own communities, and this doesn’t always have to be the reality of south Asian culture.
